Lactose, also known as milk sugar, is a disaccharide sugar found in milk and dairy products. Glucose and galactose combine to form lactose. When a food containing lactose reaches the digestive system, it is broken down by the lactase enzyme produced in the small intestine into glucose and galactose. Lactose intolerance or lactase deficiency occurs when there is a shortage of the lactase enzyme, which prevents the digestion of lactose. Undigested lactose can cause various symptoms and discomfort.
